Tim Lalonde, who raced Marcos GT and Mini Marcos cars in the 1960s, was our guest here in Arizona for a few days this past week. Tim was one of the three drivers for the 1967 Mini Marcos Le Mans effort (Chris Lawrence/Jem Marsh/Tim Lalonde-GB).
We took "Elmo" out for a spin, of course, with Tim at the wheel. As Tim is also the second owner/driver of our 1962 Marcos Gullwing, HOO144 (he bought it from Stephen Minoprio in 1963 and raced it in 1963 & 1964), we also enjoyed pouring over HOO144 in detail; it is currently under restoration and being re-commissioned for racing with FIA papers.
Tim and I also travelled to the historic town of Tombstone, Arizona to see the O.K. Corral shoot-out site (Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, etc) and Boot Hill Cemetary. A photo of Tim with our pick for best Boot Hill epitaph is attached.
Tim has now gone on to visit Billy Dulles in Phoenix, Arizona, where they will no doubt be discussing when they co-drove 270DGJ at the 1966 Mugello race. The story of that early Mini Marcos race may be found on our Forum website at this link: http://www.minimarcos.org.uk/sport/mugello/index.html

Photo of Tim at the helm of "Elmo", Mini Marcos #7073. Note the headroom clearance - or lack of it! Tim's comment, "how on earth did we fit in here with our helmets on?!" |

Enjoying the Arizona sunshine - it was already 80 degrees Fahrenheit on this mid-April day here in the American Southwest. A front-mounted radiator is essential here. |

He still seem to fit the car pretty well, considering it was 39 years since the Le-Mans race.
If Billy reads this, could he ask Tim a question for me, he might be able to shed some light on something that I noticed a few years ago, it's about the wheel spats on the rear of the 67 Le-Mans car.
This is the picture that I always associate with the 67 race, I even have a copy of it in colour with Chris Lawrence's autograph, in the picture, which seems to have been taken in fairly dark light, the car has the covers on the back wheels, but in other pictures of the race,
no wheel covers.
Here is another picture that appeared on a postcard, again no wheel covers.
So, my question is, did they start the race with the covers on ? and why did they take them off ? |

I'd guess that the first picture was taken during qualifying, except that it looks as though the windscreen angle had been changed, which I thought was done just before the race. Probably the time lost taking the spats off was more than that saved by having them on.
Interestingly they had the headlamp covers on for the '67 race evn though the year before they'd found that they cut out too much light. Of course in '67 it didn't last long enough to have to use the lights. |

I don't think the picture was taken during qualifying Richard, as you say the windscreen angle is changed in that picture, and if you check out the picture of the car on the weighbridge, you will see that the screen is in it's original position, it also has the wheel spats. So this picture ,I presume, is one from the qualifying.
You will also notice that the bonnet strap had not as yet been fitted. |
